Royal Wedding

I feel that as yesterday was such a moment in history, I should at least touch on it breifly.

I felt very proud to be british yesterday; it was lovely to see red, white and blue bunting everywhere! I sat and watched the wedding from 10am onwards, fitting in a speedy shower between them getting to the palace and the balcony scene!

I thought Kate (Catherine?) looked absolutely gorgeous in her dress. I was glad she chose Alexander McQueen's successor to create the gown, it was absolutely gorgeous and although I've no plans to wander down the aisle any time soon, I would like one just to wear around the house.
As you can imagine, I was unbelievably excited to see what the cake would look like. I had heard rumours of a three teir simple cake...but goodness knows where that information came from cause there was no simple about the finished product! It was absolutely stunning.
I can imagine everyone at Fiona Cairns is having a well deserved break today, I think what they acheived is just incredible. I bow to you Fiona, you and your team did brilliantly!

Lady Gaga Cake

It was the birthday of one of my very best friends, so I wanted to make an amazing cake. She's absolutely in love with Lady Gaga, so I decided to make a cake based on the video for 'Telephone'.

I wanted to make a telephone to sit on the top that looked a little like the one Lady Gaga wore for her appearance on Jonathan Ross, and the bottom teir I took ideas from the video itself. I ended up incorporating the American flag and Police tape outfits Lady Gaga wears for the bottom teir. The overall look was a little something like this:

I had to stick all those sparkly bits on by hand, which was a pretty lengthy process...but I really like the effect they created. Lots of them fell off as my friend couldn't resist pretending it was ringing and posing with it for much of the evening!

It was great to see the cake was so well appreciated!

Boyfriends Birthday - Monopoly Bar Crawl

It was my boyfriends birthday recently, and he decided to do a 'Monopoly Bar Crawl' to celebrate the occasion. This is pretty much what it sounds like, a jaunt around the 26 places featured on a Monopoly board until you've reached the end, or lost the ability to stand.

Being the very good girlfriend that I am, I made him a Monopoly board birthday cake to take to work.

Making this cake was much easier than the bar crawl...!

Easter Bunnies

Easter is mere days away. It's boiling hot to the point that I wish it was socially acceptable to head to Tesco's in a Bikini, or in the very least being followed around with your own personal industrial-fan holders. I'd have three; They'd all be unbelievably attractive.

But no, instead I have no industrial fan holders and I'm spending the day making my Grandads birthday cake. Its a Liquorice Allsorts one. (Don't tell). Every time I head to the oven to get anything out, I then have to stick my whole entire body as far into the fridge as it will go to cool back down again. Oh yes, my life is very glamourous.

Cakes are now cooling ready to be decorated (I'll put a picture up when its finished) so while I had some time I thought I'd put up a picture of the Easter Bunny Cupcakes we made for Easter Sunday.

Any of you who read my previous blog will know that the Easter cake we made not long ago was actually eaten on the day of creation...so I had to come up with something else. These were what I came up with:

Little bunny faces coming out of their burrows, and little bunny bums going in. I think the bums aren't that distinguishable, but I think they're cute none the less.

Happy Easter All! xx

Royal Wedding Cupcakes

With the Royal wedding fast approaching, the whole of Great Britain is preparing for a peppering of Union Jack flags, bunting and good old fashioned tea parties. Never one to miss out on a trend, my sisters and I decided to make some cupcakes dedicated to our soon-to-be Royal Newlyweds.

We decided to make simple cupcakes with three themes of topper. We went for a Union Jack Flag...

which I think came out really well. The colours went nicely with the light blue icing and the pattern was easy to replicate for multiple cupcakes. Plus, theres nothing like a bit of patriotism for our Royal Family, the least we could do!

The second cupcake pattern was based around the idea of Royalty itself, with a crown design.

We'd just got some exciting new gold paint so this was an excellent chance to try it out. The paint went on really nicely so we're looking forward to using it again. The third cake was based around the newlyweds themselves.

This was my least favourite topper, I have to say. Not only were we umming and ahhing about whether to write C for Catherine or K for Kate, but I was also told, after doing all the toppers, that I had been doing my & signs the wrong way round my whole life! My mum broke the news, and I was devistated to discover that I'd been making a fool of myself in all my abreviations until now. Also I just didn't think the design was as good as the other two. Anyway, we made a lovely display for the cakes and took lots of pictures. My mum has an amazing teapot from the Queens corronation which is shaped like her carriage. Look out for it in the second of the pictures, its really quite special.

So all thats left for me to say is good luck to the happy couple, I'm sure Kate will look gorgeous in her dress and the whole country will have an excellent day off to celebrate. Have fun whatever you're doing! xx

Time Off Work - Easter Cake

Not to rub it in, but I am currently about a quarter of the way through some glorious time off from work. The wonderful Bank Holidays offered the perfect opportunity to take loads of time off (17 days, to be exact - will I ever want to go back!?) for the grand total of 7 days holiday - Bargain!

So what to do with my time? It's been absolutely beautiful weather, and yesterday afternoon my Mum, little Sis, Boyfriend and Me went to Battlesbridge to look around the Antiques shops. If you haven't been, I suggest you jump in the car right now and set off - unless you're at work and it'll get you fired, or its 2am and the place isn't likely to be open.

I spend most of my time there saying things like, 'Look! We can put that in the cake shop...ooo that'd look amazing in the cake shop...would someone take the hint and buy me a cake shop' but to no avail. In my head, I fully furnished the cutest little cake shop in all the land. I can live with that till I win the lottery.

As well as wandering around smiling at antiques dealers, I've also been pretty busy doing little bits of baking. Inspired by all the lovely Easter cakes in the shops at the moment, I thought I'd try my hand at making my own. It was a bit of a trial in places, my buttercream was a little soft so sitting the layers straight to cover the cake was a slight nightmare, but I did manage in the end. I went for a little bunny design, with sugarpaste chicks and easter eggs round the edge. I think I ended up with something quite sweet.

I had hoped that we would be able to save the cake for Easter day. It was only a couple of days wait after all. But no. As soon as I'd taken a couple of pictures of my masterpeice, boyfriend wandered in and asked if he could have some. I begrudgingly accepted, but only when he said I could have a bigger bit than him. A dealbreaker, always.

So Happy Easter everyone, I hope you like my baking efforts! xx

Welcome

Hello Cake Lovers!

I thought I would start my blog with a little taste of what is to come. This blog dedicated to all things cake, so as well as looking at some absolute beauties, and giving reviews on cakes I try myself, the blog will also include all the oddest cakes I can find. And believe me, there are more than you might think!

As an example, here's one I found earlier..:

It's impressive, sure. The detail is so ridiculous I'd almost think someone has just put an icing blanket over a baby to save time. But they haven't, thats actual cake.

Now, I'm hazarding a guess here, but I'd say this cake was probably made to celebrate this little critters entrance into this world. A glorious occasion. As the mother I'd probably be delighted at the prospect of having a cake-replica of my baby. But when I'm handed a little piece of said replica-baby's forehead to eat, I think I'd just have a little cry. No good can come of this, surely?

So yes, lots of odd and adventurous concoctions to bring to your attention. And also, lots of tales of my own baking attempts, so feel free to let me know what you think...!
